Earth Day: Open Fire Cookout (Fire)

The kids love campfires, bonfires, burnpits, so we agreed to make a list of foods we could prepare over and open fire, as the last portion of our Earth Day studies; fire.
We headed to the forest to collect fallen tree trunks and branches before creating a large cooking fire.
We attempted both cooking in and on the charcoal, once the fire died down mid afternoon.
With several iron pans and a grate platform, we were able to cook above the heat, but we did stick some sweet potato and squash in the edges of the coals. They cooked in less time than the oven!

Preparations could have been a bit better on my part. In hindsight, I should have had a smaller fire going on the side, while we worked on the large cook space. The smaller fire could have included bannock, marshmallows and veggie dogs, so we could be cooking while eating and keep everyone working.

But we had a few successes, namely the s'mores in an iron pan! A layer of chocolate with marshmallows spread over top. Graham crackers ready for dipping! I don't think my kids have ever eaten a roasted marshmallow that wasn't burnt to a crisp, but this dish turned out great and golden.
