Perfect Square

 The Perfect Square

On the hunt for exceptional reads, we came across The Perfect Square by Michael Hall http://www.amazon.ca/Perfect-Square-Michael-Hall/dp/0061915130 about a little square who gets shredded, hole-punched, sliced and rearranged into new objects.

We opted to make some visuals to go along with the story and started by cutting out squares of felt in colours coinciding with the book.

Then we sewed on a smile (which upside-down serves as a frown later in the story.)

As we were working, I decided to double up on the coloured felt squares; one as the original, uncut square, the other as the puzzle bits.

These are great manipulative's to accompany the narrator.

Finally, I gave O her own square to cut and rearrange as she chose.

Tons of basic primary skills tackled here without seeming to 'teachy'; colours, shapes, patterns and puzzles, along with creative endeavors; sewing, fabric work, cutting and pasting.
