Seed Saving

Dried Beans

If you chat with anyone interested or involved in homesteading, the topic of Seed Saving is inevitable.
The issue, in short, is the fact that farms have become so industrialized and mauled over by major seed companies (read: Monsanto http://gmwatch.org/gm-firms/10558-the-worlds-top-ten-seed-companies-who-owns-nature) that we are losing heritage seeds and our ability to have access to the variety available.
This poses a number of environmental (plant biodiversity, pollination, GMO), political, financial and ethical issues, to name a few.

Fortunately, there are many companies that continue to support and offer heritage seed buying and trading, while others teach you how to save your own.

We're starting small, our first year of saving.
Daddy has collected the vines of green beans that were too mature for good eating. They have dried up and turned black with lovely speckles. We'll be able to package these up in paper for next years planting season.
