Before setting up this experiment, we made some predictions about what might happen if the ice and food colouring (representing hot and cold) were dropped in the water.

We got talking about how heat rises, when Ms.O asked if that is the case, why is it cold high in the sky?

The red and blue colouring made it easy to see how the cold was sinking and the red (warmer current) hovered overtop.
