Math Monday: Squares & Spheres, Circles & Cubes

Walk the Line is a Montessori activity I learned while teaching in Shanghai.
Students begin class by walking, one foot in front of the other, around a square/rectangle painted on the floor.
Some of the older students carry a tray while walking, to practice balance.
The walk is set to some soft, lyric-less music.

It seems so simple, one foot in front of the other to start the day.

After several variations (walk like a fairy...a giant....a turtle...a frog...skip....walk backwards...) we stopped in our painters tape square for a rest, while I read Mac Barnett's 2018 picture book: Square.

A simple square carries on with his daily activities of gathering square blocks when a circle calls him a genius sculptor, and requests he sculpt a version of circle.

We then examined geometric shapes with the help of playdough!
