Soil Science: Sediment Jars

More simple soil science!
Everyone collected their own specimen for Sediment Jars.

Half a jar of soil (clay in our case) and half a jar of water are all you require to see how layers form.
Shake well and watch the results.

Heavier contents sink to the bottom of the jar. In this case, we chose not to add rocks due to our jars being glass, but the sand, silt and clay separated at the bottom, leaving water and humus (decaying matter) at the top.

The longer you leave the jars undisturbed, the easier it is to identify distinct layers.
