Sci Fri: Animal Adaptations
For Friday science, we set up an Animal Adaptation Lab with two experiments.
The first was to test how birds remain dry in water due to oil glands they access during preening.
Two 'Dip Strips' were provided; one to cover with oil, the other to leave uncoated.
After dipped in water, scientists were to note observations.
We followed up with a sweet Smithson picture book about Canadian Geese, their behaviours and rearing their young.
The second lab was proceeded by a video that demonstrated how fish filter oxygen through the water they take in through their mouth and pass out of their gills.
This lab simply demonstrated how water can pass through a filter. In the case of fish, trapping oxygen would be the comparison (not necessarily debris from the pond).
With all of our Animal Habitat and Adaptation activities, we watched a fascinating film on the life of Jane Goodall and her studies of chimpanzees to learn more about early life of humans, with real footage from her time in Africa combined with present day interview.
