Square Foot Science: Set-Up & Sound Map

After reading the book One Small Square, the idea of Square Foot Science was born.

Square Foot Science involves marking off a square foot of nature to examine at a micro level.
We decided to extend this science lab by creating several projects over the week, to observe and interact with our own square foot space.

Our first day was simply observation and recording.
However we also listed things to look for, as described in the book: eggs, fungus, plants, insects, droppings, seeds, tracks, tunnels, webs....
The list is quite long if you consider all of the possibilities.

SOUND MAPS

Day Two we drew Sound Maps.
We have done these before, by choosing a stationary spot, setting up chair and drawing supplies, sketching out landmarks in your area and then recording where sounds are coming from with your own legend (note for song bird, wavy line for wind, etc.)
We also work on our Deer Ears, which is cupping your hands behind your ears for sound improvement.

As a complete side, we read a small passage about Helen Keller in Reading Comprehension, to learn about how she lost her senses of sight and hearing after what they think was Scarlet Fever.
A great big thanks to Mrs T for this recommendation.
We love a science picture book whose hero is a GIRL!
Very well done and even describes the Scientific Method.

A beautiful poem about the four seasons with stunning paintings to match.
