Tens
In this Greater Than > Less Than game, the books suggests writing out number cards.
We substituted a deck of cards minus the face cards. You essentially need single digit numbers.
We started with Tens:
Each player takes any two cards from a fanned deck.
The object is to make the highest number with your cards.
We added the element of our wooden place value cards to emphasize position.
The highest card takes all cards.
We then moved into Hundreds and Thousands (they even wanted a go at 5 cards).
Not only does this help with learning how to create the highest number, it also reviews place value, how many numbers are in Tens/Hundreds/Thousands, recognizing greater than and less than symbols and how to say large numbers (nine thousand, eight hundred and forty three).
Often times they were stuck because both had numbers starting with 9 thousand, so they had to back track down the line until one place value proved higher than the other players.
An extension game involves die. By rolling and writing out the highest number, you can then determine which symbol goes in the center.
