History Timeline
This project has been in the making for some time.
The idea of an ongoing History Timeline, I found in a homeschool resource called The Well Trained Mind.
Though this particular read is based on Classical Education Curriculum, it is chock full of fantastic resources and ideas to implement into your home education environment.
We opted to change three things about the timeline:
~cloth not paper (canvas drop cloth gave us a cheap, durable and lengthy line to keep over time)
~not equal increments between years (we opted to have a condensed version that fits across a wall, rather than around a room)
~choosing to use CE and BCE instead of BC & AD
(Common Era and Before Common Era, takes away the religious element)
We are taking some time to place small pictures/projects that we have created in the past, to display above their era on the timeline (as seen above 'Laura' 1870 from Little House on the Prairie and the 1912 Titanic)
As we read literature or topics from history come up in conversation/study, we will add them to the timeline.
Friends of ours introduced us to the amazing Magic Treehouse Series by Mary Pope Osborne.
Not only are these amazing chapter books for beginning readers, but they offer a glimpse into events from the past. A brother and sister travel through time in their treehouse, solving riddles and learning about the world at large.
