Snowball Earth

A little midweek science activity surrounding our theme of Ice & Snow, involved looking at two of the Ice Ages and today's North Pole.

We used our Snow Dough to cover a pomelo as the Earth would have looked 720 million years ago.
It was nicknamed Snowball Earth as it was entirely engulfed in ice.

 The Equator & Snowball Earth

The next Ice Age period we looked at (the most recent) was 23,000 years ago.
Ice covered North America and much of Europe (in this picture we're on our way to peeling snow from the Equator.)
The most recent Ice Age was the time of the Ice Age Animals that we are most familiar with; woolly mammoth, scimitar cat, cave bears....

In modern day, ice and snow covers regions of the North Pole.
However, we discussed how polar ice caps are receding, why and how that will influence the entire world.
Obvious environmental changes for Northern animals and cultures, but also water level alterations for the rest of the world.
We also discussed how the snow and ice insulates the Earth and the impact that exposure will have on an increasingly warmed climate.
