Eye Sci

Eye Sci is an other aspect of our Systems of the Body.
We had several mini science experiments to learn how the eyes and brain work together.

Depth Perception
https://thehomeschoolscientist.com/science-saturday-studying-the-senses/
Place a cup 2 feet in front of you on a surface.
Cover one eye and have a partner float a coin above the cup, moving forwards and backwards.
Call 'drop' when it seems that the coin is directly over the cup.
*The kids have way better depth perception than I do!

Mirror Writing
We combined an art activity (oil pastel transfer) with a brain game; writing in mirror images.
Fold card paper in half.
Use oil pastels to completely colour one inside flap of the card.
Close the card and write a message in mirror on the flap that has not been coloured.
When you open the card, the message should appear correctly.
*If your child easily frustrates with challenge, try having them write their message and then taking it to a window to trace the mirror version. This also helps them get their head around writing right to left and a backwards alphabet.

Cones & Colour
*This experiment we combined with one of my favourite books by Eric Carle 'Red Fox'.
Draw three circles vertically, like a stop light, but colour them red, blue and green.
Have child cover 2/3 and stare at the remaining circle for 30 seconds before gazing at the white paper.
'Magic' appears!
*Discuss cones as providing colour detail for your eye/brain

Blind Spots
We found several experiments like this one https://learning-center.homesciencetools.com/article/eye-and-vision/  that help you recognize your eyes blindspots
