Skin Science

The second system of the body we're examining are Skin, Hair & Nails.
1) We started with a hot and cold water experiment; why our skin has sensors that allow us to feel hot and cold and how the brain communicates messages via skin.
2) We also did an amazing Touch Test, where we have a tray of 'mystery' objects and blindfold a player. Then we allow the player to examine the object with their bare foot. If they cannot identify the object by foot alone, they are allowed to use their hands. In the majority of cases, hands knew in an instant what our feet struggled to understand.
3) Lastly, we created prints to determine which of the three main types of fingerprints we each have: arch, loop or whorl. The kids expanded this activity by testing if all of their fingerprints have the same design.

Then we took a look at species of animals and what they wear to protect them from the elements (and predators!)
