Foraging: Hickory Nuts
The intense amount of effort and concentration that has gone into hickory nut collection is astounding. Never doubt your childs ability to focus until you have seen them in their element! This activity is 100% father-fueled and the kids cannot get enough.
First they collect the nuts in the forest. They are green or blackened at this time of year and have already fallen from the tree.
Next they shell and crack them, monkey-style, with tools at hand.
Lastly, they use a small pick (in our case, eye-glass screwdrivers) to scoop out the contents.Apparently these are safe to eat raw, or you can roast and add them to your favourite recipes in place of other nuts. https://www.survivalsullivan.com/foraging-hickory-nuts/
