Math Monday: Symmetry Portraits

Super simple symmetry activity for all ages; complete the picture. In the past, we have done this with magazine pictures. With young children you can even try offering half shapes or use mirrors to show the completion of the other side. However, we missed out on our annual portraits in September, so we cut out large pieces of cardboard and I painted half portraits for the kids to guess who was who.

For the younger set, keep to simple straight and curved lines. The older set you can add more detail, change the width of your brush strokes and have them draw from right-to-left as added challenges. Using chalk to start, allows them to correct mistakes without excess frustration. They can complete their work with paint and expand on the art.

I was inspired by my muses and their endless goofing about!
