Map Monday: Northern Reindeer Migration

Keeping with our wintry themes in January, we set out to learn about reindeer migration in the Northernmost parts of the world, specifically Finland and Siberia. We began by watching the documentary "A Reindeers Journey". A crew of Finnish film makers followed baby reindeer Ailo through his first year of life. It gave a good picture of the harsh conditions in Lapland and the trials faced by wild reindeer herds.

We learned about the Nenet tribe in Siberia, whose lives depend on their reindeer herd, with the help of BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/tribe/tribes/nenets/index.shtml

Afterwards we completed two map challenges: watercolour map and labelling, plus finding countries via coordinates with the help of an atlas. For the younger set, we challenged them to re-create a Finnish map with Lego!
