Bird Song Sonogram

Our next sound science activity involved creating sonograms of bird songs. We talked about sonograms being a picture of sound, drawn by how smooth or sharp, high or low, long or quick the sound is heard. We discussed how you can indicate these differences with a line drawing (smooth or sharp lines, lines above or below the center point, lines high or short to indicate length of sound.)

Then we listened to five examples of bird songs before determining what the sonogram might look like.

We were also the first to borrow this beautiful book from the local library: Sounds of Nature: World of Birds. Each page has illustrations of birds that live in various environments and a button to listen the sounds they make.
