Map Monday: Bird Sound Map

It's the Great Backyard Bird Count (Feb 12-16) and we're spending the week learning about feathered wildlife who stayed North this season. We make sure to get a few Sound Maps in per year and try to vary the seasons. The kids set up with a clipboard, each having a giant 'X' in the center to indicate their position outdoors. With a bird feeder in hand-they find a sheltered spot to camp for ten minutes of listening. On their map-they have to draw symbols of their surroundings. Every time they hear a bird song, they must indicate it by a music note on the correct location of the map.

Afterwards we take a look at everyone's map and determine the areas the birds prefer and why that may be.
