Sci Fri: Zooming Hearts
Combining science and symmetry for the Zooming Hearts experiment!
This week, we've tackled a few symmetry projects with Chinese characters, zodiac symbols and the kids have even created their own projects for their brother (butterfly symmetry), by drawing one half of a butterfly and challenging him to draw the other.
In honour of Valentines Day, we pulled out the red paper and cut a pile of symmetrical hearts in preparation for take off. Fill a shallow pan with water and predict what will happen when you place a heart on the surface. Test. Then dip the base of a dry heart into a bowl of liquid soap. Predict what will happen this time. Test.

While our trays of water were ready-we review Kirigami Blossoms-creating paper flowers and folding in the petals. Once you place them on the water, they begin to blossom! You may have to test out various weights of paper, as certain thicknesses work better than others in absorbing and opening.
