Word Wednesday: Mandarin Characters for Sun & Moon (Day & Month)

 k

If you can count in Mandarin and learn the word for day and month-you can successfully say all the days of the week and months of the year. The Chinese character for Day (xing qi) is the same as Sun. The character for Month (yue) is the same as Moon. Fun and practical pictographs!

In Mandarin, to learn the days of the week, you literally say Day/Sun + Number (Monday= xing qi yi, Tuesday= xing qi er...) The same goes for months of the year, but flipped; Number + Moon (January= yi yue, February = er yue..)

Combine Sumi-E painting (four finger and thumb, vertical hold) with Chinese Calligraphy to make some basic characters. Chinese characters have strict rules about their strokes-but we're a little forgiving as long as the character looks accurate in the end.
