Artists Study: Mini Monet

Our watershed & pond studies led us to another famous artist, Claude Monet. Monet was known for his Water Lily paintings and finding inspiration for his work, from his gardens. We drew water lilies with oil pastels before covering the paper in drops of watercolour paint. The oil and water tend not to mix, so it's also a lesson in science.

Drawing lily pads can be simplified for those learning shapes. Draw a 'C' and connect the ends with an inverted triangle. Mr. M was capable and willing. Encourage artists to use a variety of shades for the lily pads-even some pinks and blues.

Katie & The Waterlily Pond is a picture book that gives a glimpse of Monet's work. This series by James Mayhew is a great introduction to famous artists for little kids.
