Math Monday: Place the Digit

With some scrap slabs of slate, we made individual playing boards for Place the Digit. You can use a number spinner or deck of cards (numbers 2-9, minus face, ace and ten). For the first round, leave two spaces to make a number in the tens. You can choose highest or lowest. Once the card is called, each player writes it in a space and it cannot be erased.

Move onto three digit (hundreds), four digits (thousands), three and four digits with a reject box option, simple addition questions (create stacked boxes for adding-to result in the highest number possible).

The littlest members of the family can be the caller-as it helps them with number recognition. Eventually, our littlest member learned how to play and joined in-acquiring some writing practice and < > knowledge. Remarkably, in this game of risk, he usually won!

'Family Math' was on my wish list for some time-being recommended by several homeschool resources. It is divided into several sections and provides a good range of math games to play at home, as a basis for learning or practicing concepts. There are hundreds and games and extensions-but a good 30-50 that we would realistically play often.

Monday Math Labs are also very successful. Also math in game form-we have several indepedant games that can be played with cheerios or stones and a set of die. A few games require a set of dominos or deck of cards.
