Word Wednesday: Pond Poetry

 

Since the Spring has arrived, the interest level in pond life has as well. We practiced a little 'Silent Science' using nature observation with a glass jar. I handed everyone a piece of cardboard and a mason jar with a flat bottom as a 'pond viewer'. After they selected a spot for 'Silent Science' they laid on their stomachs for a view of life under the pond.

 

Because our pond is mud-bottomed, viewing proves to be a bit tricky. They did collect a sample of the water, which itself, seems very clear. We took it indoors for a closer look with a jewelers loupe and discovered all the 'floaters' hidden inside. It was deemed not potable.

Before choosing a style of poetry, we read a few pond picture books to collect words and a list of living organisms as food for thought

We have Denise Flemings land version of this read: 'In the Tall, Tall Grass'. It is a simple rhyming book that looks at the multitude of living things in the world around us.

 

A beautiful picture book that examines all the life above and below freshwater bodies.
