Artists Study: Michaelangelo Fresco

 j

Marble and gypsum were two types of rock used in the art of Michaelangelo. We experimented with 'fresco' painting; used in the Sistene Chapel. A much smaller scale version can be found at Wee Folk Art https://weefolkart.com/homeschool/italian-fresco-painting-children/

Gympsum is used in Plaster of Paris. For fresco, it can be painted fresh or dry. Since we don't have any plaster of Paris we concocted a similar recipe using 2 parts flour, 1 part water, before pouring it onto our burlap squares.

Give it an hour to develop a crust-before painting (unless you have kids whose life motto is the messier the better). It takes several days to dry before you can crack and seal with glue.

Be sure to introduce Michaelangelo and his talent from the 1400's!
