Math Monday: Gnomes & Numbers 'Four Operations'

For a wee year-end review-we're turning to the Gnomes & Numbers to examine the four operations. The gnomes fit nicely in our Rocks & Minerals studies as they are always depicted as miners.

Four gnomes each represent a different mathematical operation: Plus (addition), Minus (subtraction), Times (multiplication) and Divide (division). In Waldorf education they follow a storyline that emphasizes their operation (greedy Plus, sharing Divide). You can purchase The Gnomes Gemstones, to support your Waldorf teaching https://www.treasuresfromjennifer.com/search?type=product&q=gnomes+and+numbers

We created cards containing their operation rhyme and illustrated characters.

Betty Jones' 'A Child's Seasonal Treasury' is filled with poetry regarding gnomes and mining.

We own D'Aulaires Greek Mythology and it's so well done, we could not pass up their Book of Trolls. It's a whimsical account of various trolls and how they turn to stone if they see the light of day.
