Math Monday: Spider Web Skip Counting & Insect Walk & Web Catcher

j

Waldorf has a story about two spiders weaving their webs, so we set up a slice of slate with a circle marked 0-9 and two pieces of coloured chalk.

We then read Walters Wonderful Web, where the spider experiments with making webs of several shapes before creating a unique masterpiece
.

We saved the slate to play Insect Walk. Create teams of two. One member will draw a shape on their partners back, while the partner tries to copy the shape on slate. With older children, you can advance to letters and spell messages. Or in a large group, have the children sit in a circle facing the person to their left and send a picture around the circle like a silent game of Telephone.

We moved our spider studies outdoors to create Spider Catchers. Using a 'Y' branch, add a third stick to form a triangle. Stick your post in the ground where you suspect spiders wander. Keep watch over the next few days to see if the spider has created a web.
