Word Wednesday: Sediment Scavenger Hunt & Mountain-Making Science

 k

Before learning about the various particle sizes in sedimentary rock-the kids were sent on a scavenger hunt. I had placed 11 three stone cairns  around the property-each marked with a number and corresponding letter. They had to record the word on their clipboards, before learning to pronounce it!

Indoors, we had set up chalk pastels and a particle chart: boulders, cobbles, pebbles, sand, silt and clay-all referring to the possible contents of sedimentary rock.

We read two stories, both of which featured Rock Cairns: Bring Me A Rock and Rhoda's Rock Hunt.

Then we tried out a Mountain-making experiment using layers of towels to represent rock-and learned what happens when the earths plates collide over hundreds of years.
