Collograph Print Portraits

M's Portrait of Dad

Every year we begin our Not-Back-to-School with a self portrait. This year we opted to attempt collograph printing. Normally our prints are relief style (carving out), but collograph prints require building up. We made the mistake of using acrylic paint, so the cardboard did stick a little. In the future, ink prints would fit the bill.

Begin by drawing yourself!

Cut out the shapes, understanding that they must remain on the same plane so when ink covers them, they will print evenly.

Glue everything in place on another piece of cereal box.

Using a roller or brayer, spread ink evenly. Too much and the ink will ooze into spaces not intended. Too little and your print will not turn out clearly. Be prepared with practice papers.
