Literature Study: Whittling

 k

The plan was to whittle a canoe to send down the Grand River-Paddle to the Sea style. However, no one could imagine parting with their Paddle-so we found a tutorial on carving a simple bird. For keeps.

First find a 1/2" diameter branch 'V'. Lop off one branch of the 'V' shorter than the other (body vs. tail).

2. Strip the bark on the head. Round the head and sand if needed.

3. Strip the bark off of the tail. Carve to a point.

4. Draw a wing on either side. Carve away remaining bark, leaving wing bark intact.

5. Carve inwards at the base.
