Art History: Emily Carr Pines

The Group of Seven is a fairly well known organization of male artists from Canada, who created works of nature. Their lesser-known eighth member was a female artist, Emily Carr. We took inspiration from Carr's affinity for pines to create our own seasonal works.

Start by drawing a line up your page (centered or off-centered) that will represent the trunk. From there, you are going to create side-to-side branches, starting off short and gaining in length. It will form a triangular shape, which pines are known for.

Using a variety of shades of green, as well as colours like blue and purple to accent, colour your branches. We used oil pastels, so we could paint our background at the end.

When painting sky-I encourage the kids to think about different times of day or year and how the sky changes colour. Blue is beautiful-but the sky has a vibrant range that is important to explore.
