Letter I: Inuit, Igloo, Ice & Island

 k

Continuing with our Alphabet Theme studies into 2022, we moved to the letter I. We managed to combine it with the seasons-learning about Inuit culture: igloo's, ice fishing, island and Inuit artist, Kenojuak.

Our first attempt at igloo's was to look at geometric shapes with paper. Essentially, turning a piece of paper into a 3D object by cuts and folds. This proved extremely challenging-the paper is not prone to fold like a dome and ended up looking like pyramids.

We could have used marshmellows-but those would have never made it to an igloo stage. We opted for play dough-recently made gifted to us over the holidays. Mr. made rectangular blocks by cutting squares in half lengthwise.

The most successful igloo's however, came days afterward...with the snow!

Next was an assignment to create a list of items necessary for ice fishing.

Lastly, we learned about Baffin Islands and Inuit life though print-maker Kenojuak https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxGEX4jZSYc
