M is for Memory: Five Variations

My kids never pass up an opportunity to play a game-even if I get a little sneaky and make it about learning. For any reluctant littles who would rather do anything than recognize their ABC's (or ATV's  and OMG's as it's called around here!) this version of memory was a big hit-so we came up with several variations to keep the streak going!

Variation One by big sister Miss C: Arrange the alphabet (scrabble tiles, puzzle pieces, wooden ABC blocks/stamps/cookie cutters) from A-Z. Have your little brother close his eyes and remove one letter.

Variation Two, also by big sister Miss C: Leave the alphabet arranged in order. When your little brother finally agrees to close his eyes, change one letter (turn the V sideways, for example.) Have him identify the mistake.

Variation Three: Place several letters on a tray/table. Study for one minute. Cover with fabric and remove one letter. Have child identify which is missing. (after a few rounds, re-arrange letters on table or take more than one letter.)

Variation Four: Use a variety of objects (in our case, we used items from China for our Lunar New Years decorating) to cover with cloth. Remove one object for child to identify.

Variation Five: Read an alphabet book that represents at least one word per letter. Place letters in a bag and have child choose one letter. They must remember the word that was linked to the letter from the book. We used D is for Dragon Dance for the final variation of our memory games.
