T is for Tree: Van Gogh's Olive Grove

 j

Love a little art history implemented into our week. This time we visited Van Gogh and his Olive Grove with the help of 'Dad Draws'.

It's good to get some background on the artist to round out the lesson with some geography and history of their life and travels. It's also helpful to take a look at their portfolio of pieces, especially if you're doing a little forgery. We examined Van Goghs rich use of lines to represent movement.

There was also some vanishing point perspective to take a peek at (hello, math) which really rounds out the lesson into several subjects. Once you have mapped out the pieces with some pencil lines, 'Dad Draws' demonstrated how you can use your medium of choice (in this case, we used oil pastels for their vibrant shades) to draw rounded and wavy lines before dotting between the lines.

We always use Starry Night, to learn stories about the artist.
