Learning Latitude & Longitude

Using Op Art we learned to draw a sphere that pops out from the page. One of the original artists to discover optical illusion art was female, Bridget Riley. With lines alone she could make movement come alive on a page.

We then learned about how the Earth was originally considered flat and how humans came to find clues that it is in fact spherical. Then the problem with creating maps and globes to accurately place all the countries and continents. We conducted an easy experiment using the top of a plastic bottle. Drawing rings horizontally (latitude) and vertically (longitude) and placing a source of light inside, gave us an idea of how map-making could take into account the orb we call Earth.
