Map Monday: Philippines-Coron & Culion Islands
After reading the beautiful book The Island at the End of Everything, we created a small lit study. Along with the help of a dear friend, we learned a little more about the Philippines. In addition we had the chance to learn a little about leprosy in history and present day.
Our map-making depicted Culion, the former leper colony, was declared free of leprosy as late as 1996. As well as the neighbouring island Coron, where the 'untouched' children were sent to orphanages. Leprosy is one of the worlds oldest diseases and now considered curable.
