Soot Drawing & Charcoal Sticks

Butterflies were a strong theme throughout The Island, so we included them several times in our art this week. We attempted soot drawings and used charcoal skewers to add details. To create a soot drawing, simply wave a piece of heavier stock paper gently above a candle flame until you create soot beneath. Use an eraser of your finger to draw into the soot, essentially removing soot to create a negative space drawing. Then add details with your charcoal skewer (a bamboo skewer burnt in flame.)
