Pompeii's 'Panis Quadratus' & Volcano
We traveled vicariously to Pompeii with Little Family Big World, to learn about what happened in the ancient city before it was covered in lava and volcanic ash in 79ACE. In some of our Roman Empire books we learned that loaves of bread were found carbonized, which historians refer to as Panis Quadratis. We didn't follow the 2,000 bread recipes people have created based on the ingredients that would have been available at the time, instead we used our Honey Spelt recipe and split the bread into quadrants with oiled cotton string.
Meanwhile, bread baking in the oven, we set to some sensory work for the wee one. We sliced one end of a lemon to allow it to sit upright (don't slice too deep, as the juices will escape out the bottom). the top we carved a hole. Then mashed the juices with a popsicle stick, added a drop of liquid soap and some baking soda.
