Math Monday: Water Clock

Mr. M got busy creating a clock out of a bottle of water, a simplified version of the Tower of the Winds in Athens.

First he had to figure out a tool that would make a tiny hole at the very bottom of the bottle, then he filled the bottle up and placed it in a pan for the water to drain. He learned that once the bottle water level reached the pan water level, it stopped leaking. So he devised a pedestal to continue the flow.

For the first several rounds, he tested if the bottle was consistent (it turned out to take 8 minutes to drain) and for the final round, he marked the level with masking tape, every minute.

This kept him occupied with trial and error for an entire hour, while the big kids worked on their Architecture Art.
