Instead, we opted to create a plasticine cross-section.
The catch?
Each child had to choose an hour slot to blindfold themselves that same morning. They chose their time slots prior to knowing what projects would be assigned. Miss C chose the first opening, 9-10am; the time we were creating our cross sections. Miss O had to guide her through, handing her balls of plasticine and instructions.
Mr. M chose the second time slot from 10-11am. He was assigned math workbook, so he needed an assistant to help him read the questions and write his answers.
The final time slot was Miss O. Hers proved to be the most challenging as we were finished our assignments for the morning and had a period of free time.
"I can't do anything!"
For a while, she sat a little forlorn and frustrated. After 10 minutes, she was asking the time and then again after 11 and 12 minutes. She couldn't believe the hour was passing so slowly. Finally, she took the toddler, had him bring her a book and flipped the pages while he pointed out pictures. She was eager to read (her favourite free time activity) but was stuck not knowing how to do that without her sight. Eventually, we agreed to tuck into our family read aloud, which she could enjoy listening in on.
Once everyone was free of their blindfold, we participated in a Blind Spot activity and online Eye Test.
