Spinning Tops: Power Tool Painting
'Spinning Tops and Things that Bounce' are part of the Toyshop in Elfhem. In Haig's The Girl who Saved Christmas, human character, Amelia Wishheart is encouraged to work in the shop with experienced elves. When set to create spinning tops, she makes a bit of a mess.
We decided to try out Haig's version of spinning top creating with the help of a power tool!
This isn't the first time we've included power tools in our art lesson and it won't be the last. The kids love these projects and come up with lots of ideas on how to improve the process.
In the end, the most successful run was creating a sturdy cardboard disc and several matching pieces of paper with tiny holes placed in the center, to help ease them on and off the drill bit. Instead of paint, we opted for a colourful combo of markers (a little less messy) and then took multiple turns creating designs.
