Medieval Europe: Heraldry

h

Ending our week, we completed our own Coat of Arms before heading into next weeks studies of Monks, Monasteries and the Feudal System.

Dad has his family Coat of Arms, so we began by looking at the colours, designs and crest. Using several charts available online, we could 'translate' the meaning of the colours and images.

Then, we set to choosing colours that represent aspects of our personalities (loyalty, bravery...) and images that also define the people completing these mock crests.

We learned how knights would use these crests on their shields and horses to represent their loyalty and families. When Coat of Arms are divided into several sections, we learned that families would add to their crest with each marriage so the crest showed a picture of lineage.
