Shifting Gears: Owl Automation

A very unique way to shift gears from our mini Owl Unit into Monster Truck Science with this amazing automation creation. We several versions of this with no particular instructions, so the kids had to examine the photo and figure it out.

After collecting supplies (cardboard, bamboo skewers and hot glue) we began by creating the gears, two in total. Using a circle stencil (drinking mug) they traced and cut out the circles. Then they marked six evenly spaced lines to insert bamboo skewers, broken in half.

Several sized circles were needed to  a) hold the skewer from sliding b) serve as a spinning wheel handle c) carry the drawings that would spin on top.

We agreed to go through a dry run once all of the pieces were prepared, just in case a part wasn't perfect. The gears needed trimming once inside the box as they hit the edges. Other than that, we were good to go.
All entry points for the skewers were glued to hold them in place. The 'axle' skewer through the center simply sits in place, while the skewer running vertically, dangles and is prevented from slipping through by the disc holding it on top of the box.

Once complete, the kids set off to draw owls that will be taped to the top disc, appearing as if they fly when the machine is cranked.
