Animals & Creatures (The Hobbit): Wood Elves Lanterns
These beautiful paper lanterns were surprisingly simple to create. It was our first foray with papier mache with a fabulous tutorial from HGTV https://www.hgtv.com/design/make-and-celebrate/handmade/how-to-make-pressed-flower-lanterns-pictures
The project spanned two days; the first to create our paper & paste and apply it to the balloons. We tried to make the balloons the same size and left the opening of the lantern at the opening of the balloon. We secured them to tree branches with binder clips to dry.
Day two, we released the lantern from it's mold, some with the help of a knife and others with the help of an arrow!!
Lastly, we sealed pressed flowers on the sides and created copper hooks to carry the lanterns. The wood elves in The Hobbit created a sort of mirage of twinkling lights for the weary travelers. But this also segues into our week of Chinese Mid Autumn Festival (white rabbit lanterns.)
