Lunar New Year: Math Monday (Percentage Pictures & Papercut)

Started our celebrations for Lunar New Year with Grace Lin's Dragon papercut! Papercut it a great introduction to symmetry.

The big kids created their own intricate designs and (painstakingly) sliced them with exacto blades.

Then we revisted a former project: Percentage Pictures. The kids create a 10x10grid on graph paper. They then have to transfer a design into squares, triangles and rectangles, colouring them to create an image. Once the image is complete, they finish the background with colour before determining which the percentages of each colour. This is a great math-art project to introduce percentage, but also a fun project for an art challenge.
