Rainbow Week: Walking Rainbow (Primary & Secondary Colours)

After learning colour wheel theory-we put it into action with a Walking Rainbow.
This science has several parts. First, using three glasses of water, place a few drops of food colouring with the primary colours (red, blue and yellow). Then ask the kids to place glasses in front of one another, to notice the new colours being created (secondary colours).

Second, fill three more glasses with water and this time, have the kids use food colouring combo's to create the secondary colours (red + yellow = orange, blue + yellow = green, red + blue = purple).

Lastly, fold paper towels in half lengthwise, to connect the glasses in a ring. Please note: I set this up with one mistake. The order should go as follows: Y O R P B G. As the towel absorbs the colour and meets in the middle, you should see hints of the new colour creation.

The Rainbow and You by EC Krupp is a fantastic science picture book, all about the rainbow and how it is created.
