Earth Day: Clean Water Challenge
While the littles were learning about the cycle of water from oceans to earth and back again, the big kids were learning how to purify water and the importance of clean water for all.
One challenge was to create a water filter that could essentially rid dirty water of it's large and fine particles. The idea was to take a cup of dirty water and have it pour through with as much clarity as possible. Miss O chose charcoal, wood chip and gravel with very good results in terms of clarity. Then we watched Science Max's version of a water filter and made some modifications (most importantly, added sand!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbnSEJfoVOY
The second challenge was to create a water still that would serve in a survival situation using a sheet of plastic and a container. Miss C set up a hole in the garden, lined it with grass under a cup and placed a sheet of plastic on top, held down by rocks and a weight in the center for condensate water to drip.
It helped to have a sunny day!
By Day Two, she discovered 1/4c of clear water provided by her still.
