Hummingbirds: LEGO decoding

Absolutely privileged over here at Windy Acres! Spring has sprung and the baby animals are in full swing. Many mornings, if I'm up and at it early enough, I've spotted a doe and her fawn in the local stream. A baby bunny is oblivious to human danger, so she hopes very slowly when we come near and pokes her head into the grass, thinking we can't see her anymore! And this week, we noticed a hummingbird outside of our window that is tending to her nest!!

We dropped all plans and started researching and learning about hummingbirds. Crossing our fingers the jays stay away from her little fledglings!

We set up a LEGO decoding board for Mr. M, who is learning to spell. Set up a lego base, as shown in the first photo, with different pieces representing each letter of the alphabet. Then create a lego word on a separate lego base that must be translated using the decoding board. We used LEGO to spell HUMMINGBIRD.

Every day of the week, we have been adding new facts to the LEGO boards to be decoded. By weeks end, all the facts ended up sounding like a poem!
