Nature & Colour Poetry

A pile of paint strip samples can turn into a simple study of colour, nature and language. I spread out the samples, face down, so each child choose a random colour. They had to bring their strip outdoors and look for shade matches. It's not quite the peak of the summertime, so some colours were trickier than others. Spring and Winter would be the most challenging times of year for this colour project.

Once they shared their findings, they wrote a simple poem starting at the lightest shade and ending at the darkest, to complete on the typewriter.

Yellow is...

cold lemonade on a hot day,

dandelions in the afternoon,

a tiny bumblebee

a ginger kitten

the bright sun.

Orange is...

kool aid,

sweet,

house,

an orange person,

kubota,

carrots.

Green is...

fresh leaf buds,

Spring,

cool limes,

pond algae,

pine trees.

spruce boughs
