Fish: Gills & Oxygen
We put a simple science experiment together, to demonstrate how fish breathe. First we watched a short video about gills https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hBaH14Kpnw. Then we offered a clear glass, a coffee filter and a container of water and coffee grounds. We noted that the filter, would represent the fish gills and the coffee would act as the oxygen or 02. When the water passes through the filter (gills), the blood vessels trap the oxygen present in the water (H20) in order for the fish to survive.
We had lots of observation time by the pond, to witness how fish open and close their mouths, to allow the water to pass through their gills, in the same way that we breathe, for oxygen to enter our lungs.
