Bok Bok!

The birdies have arrived!

Eager to add to our flock, we were offered an opportunity we couldn't pass up; adopting a friendly flock from a fellow farming family. We set a deadline to be ready this Fall and the kids worked hard to help that happen.

It began with a plan; create a coop in the back third of the existing woodshed, complete with hip wall, framed-in chicken wire and an old barn door. We set to work cleaning out and hosing down before gathering reclaimed wood from the old house to begin the build.

Kids were measuring, leveling, cutting and nailing wire, screwing (and unscrewing!) wood, installing (and re-installing!) perches, hauling sand and straw, fitting new animal-height doors, creating latches and locks, designing ramps and play areas, fetching tools and snacks...even trying their hand at concrete mixing to fill in pesky holes in the foundation walls.

So when it was finally time to head out at dusk to pick up the flock, they were all smiles, after a job well done!

And now Windy Acres feels like a bone fide farm, complete with a crowing rooster early in the dawn;)

Of course, our coop wouldn't be complete without our favourite Chicken Reads...

Dory Fantasmagory (okay this one is not a chicken book, but it involves a Fairy Godmother-turned chicken!)
